Pen Pals is a dance and correspondence project devised by Robbie Synge in conjunction with Chisenhale Dance Space. The project, which ran from May to July 2014, involved two pairs of dance artists working in two primary schools: Julia worked with Lucy Boyes with primary 5/6 pupils Dornoch Primary School and, in North East London, Emilie Wangstedt and Helena Webb worked together with Year 6 pupils in Hague Primary School in Northfields.
Pen Pals aimed to connect the schools and dance artists through sharing dance, photography, video, writing and sound recordings about themselves and their local environments. Through this to and fro correspondence with another school in a very different location, it’s hoped that the young people thought about their own culture and place in the world in relation to others, particularly in the light of the Scottish Referendum.
